Software Virtual Control Devices vs. Hardware?

There were no major innovations in the typewriter for over 75 years and then in 1985 PC based word-processing took hold. After that, new feature and functionality has taken place at a rapid pace providing the platform for the simple implementation of new concepts and facilities without re-tooling a manufacturing line or sending service technicians on-site to make repairs and changes.

Look around the mechanical room. The control devices in the mechanical room are represented by many manufacturers. They are typically difficult to program and cannot be upgraded without an expensive service call, not to mention hardware costs.
